Iron Man (2008)

Woah. What a disappointment. Maybe it was that this was so built up (I had so many friends saying it was awesome), plus I remember it had a pretty good critical reaction, but man, I didn't expect this. I can't say it was bad, but it was so utterly pedestrian. Devoid of tension, mystery, even excitement. The fight/flying scenes had me yawning. The performances were passable, but there was nothing to go on, nothing for them to get their teeth into because everything was laid out. It was more predictable than the outcome of a Manchester United/Accrington Stanley game.

Downey was superb as always, and certainly the one reason to watch the film, but outside of him, it was all so dull. Very point and click cinematography, action choreography and editing. The score was absolutely awful, although the special effects, for the most part, were the most spectacular things about the whole thing. It amazes me that thirty years ago, seeing a man fly with the basest of effects technology was spellbinding, but seeing it now in a photorealistic way, it's just boring. Maybe that's because of the smorgasbord we've had with CG since the 90s, who knows. But I can't forgive such a blank film just for a good Downey performance. It's the Colin Firth of superhero movies. Dull, pedestrian, predictable, with very little personality.
